WhatsApp is one of the most popular messaging services, with an active user base of just over 1.2 billion users. The service works for free, and its only source of income is the owners of business accounts. It will not always be so.
The service is owned by Facebook, which confirmed at the annual Facebook Marketing Summit that advertisements will appear in 2020. Advertisements will be displayed in the status section of WhatsApp. It will resemble “stories” by type, like on Instagram. They may contain text, images, video or GIF-animation and will disappear 24 hours after publication.
As with regular user-generated content, ads will occupy the entire screen while browsing, and users will be able to scroll through the ads. For those who do not use the WhatsApp status section, nothing will change, because there will be no advertising in the chats section.
Facebook will allow advertisers to redirect users from Instagram and Facebook to WhatsApp. For example, by clicking on the advertising message you are interested in, the user will be redirected to the WhatsApp chat with the seller. In addition, Facebook has promised more extensive message formatting for business account holders.
